Smoky Mountain Academic Resources & Training (SMART) has been offering educational services to families, including the homeschool community, since 2006. We are pleased to offer the Woodcock-Johnson IV (WJ IV), Iowa, and Brigance.

How We Got Started
Woodcock-Johnson testing was offered in Western North Carolina many years ago by Carolina Education Resource (CER). CER was originally owned and operated by the late Wendy Coleman. Wendy built a much-needed testing and tutorial business and offered parental training workshops. Wendy also trained several qualified homeschool mothers to work with her as Woodcock-Johnson testers including, Glenna Toney who started testing in 2002.
Wendy was diagnosed with cancer in 2006, so running and operating a business became too difficult, thus, CER dissolved.
In 2006, Wendy Coleman asked Glenna Toney, one of her trained and qualified testers, if she would be interested in continuing the CER tradition of offering Woodcock-Johnson testing to families including homeschoolers. After much thought and prayer, Glenna decided to try to continue to serve WNC with a quality testing service.
As with any major business transition, the SMART testers and administration were challenged to overcome obstacles common to re-organization. However, under the leadership and guidance of Glenna Toney, the former CER was transformed into the new Smoky Mountain Academic Resources and Training, incorporated in 2007.
SMART has grown and expanded greatly since 2007. SMART now tests in many areas all across the state of NC (from Murphy to Wilmington), in SC (from Greenville to Charleston), in FL (Tampa, Ocala, Clearwater), and most recently in CO (Boulder & Denver Areas). SMART is willing to travel to your area and test (minimum number of students required). Please contact us if you are interested in hosting a SMART Testing Site or interested in hosting a SMART Testing Presentation / Workshop.

Angelique Carpenter lives in Clyde, NC, with her family. She opened their homeschool in 2000 and has taught her six children K-12. Autumn Cline resides in Ashe County, NC. She is a Specialist Level licensed and Nationally Certified School Psychologist. For the past 26 years, Autumn has served children from preschool through 12th grade and their families, providing psychoeducational evaluations, consultation with teachers and parents, interventions for students with academic and behavior challenges, counseling, social-emotional supports, social skills instruction, and advocacy for students of a wide variety of learning needs. Autumn believes that just as we are uniquely created, so are the ways and rate at which we learn and the avenues we demonstrate our knowledge. Niki Cooper. NC Certified Teacher (Licenses: K-6, K-12 AIG, K-12 Reading, and 6-9 ELA); B.S. and MA.Ed. in Education. Niki has advanced from classroom teacher to various leadership and training roles, focusing on inclusive, holistic education and program development. She also has experience teaching online courses. Heather Ertzberger lives in Wilmington, NC with her husband and three sons. She was raised in a military home so she grew up living in many different places up and down the east coast and settled in Wilmington beginning in high school. Renee Gosart lives in Davidson, NC. She has been homeschooling her children for over 16 years, from preschool through dual enrollment programs up to college. Renee has a Master of Science degree in Special Education K-12 and a Master of Science degree in Elementary Education K-6. Holly Gouge lives in McDowell County with her husband and two daughters. She has lots of experience in public education from kindergarten through adulthood in most subject areas. Considering her knowledge and experience in education, including homeschooling, Holly is eager to help families educate their children. Millie McCall lives in Mill Spring, NC, and homeschools her three youngest of five beautiful children. Mary Oliver lives in Sylva, NC where she worked as a Special Education teacher before beginning homeschooling her 3 boys in 2012. She began working with SMART in 2019 and has experience working with children of all ages and abilities, specifically students with autism and other learning challenges or delays. Mary is dedicated to helping children reach their full educational potential and has a passion for helping parents discover various learning and teaching methods to assist in their homeschooling journey. Charis Thanos and her husband, Nathan, live in Lexington, NC, with their five children. Before beginning the homeschool journey in 2022, she worked as a teacher in NC in the classroom and online with NCVPS for more than 16 years. Experience has taught her that not all children learn at the same pace or in the same manner nor demonstrate understanding and mastery in the same ways. Testing thus should not be a one-size-fits-all. Charis believes all parents should have access to the kind of information that the WJIV can provide.
